About this property

LAKE & MOUNTAIN VIEWS, RIVER RAFTING, BOATING, SKIING

Sitting on 30 acres boarding Lake Isabella , "Eagles Nest"
is a one story, beautifully decorated home. Living room has a huge beamed ceiling with a hand crafted stone fireplace. The house is built around a private gated courtyard with fireplace, barbecue, and garden. Most of the time there is a Lake view from every room but as the valley needs irrigation from the lake, the lake can fluctuate and be very low or not in front of our home. There are two marinas to launch your boat.
Boat rentals, river rafting, horse back riding, & hiking. Ski lifts are about 30-40 min drive in the winter, plenty of restaurants, very quiet & private, yet market and shopping areas within 10 minuets.
River rafting in Kernville is fabulous. There is also a slower moving river in the town that smaller children can go down with an inflatable tire, "tubing". You can also have a picnic there and enjoy your day going down the river. There are some great barbecue restaurants and also vegetarian options at most restaurants. The old town has antique shops and other shopping as well. A fun place to go.

Pretty View but Misrepresented

The house and photos are old. While this must have been a beautiful home in its prime, it is in desperate need of maintenance and cleaning. The listing states five bedrooms but only saw four, one of which was unmade and only had entrance from the courtyard which would not have been an issue had it not been for the swarms of lake flies at every entrance. Another room was locked which we suspect is one of the rooms in the photos but keys did not allow access. One bedroom could be accessed from outside or through the master and bathroom which was not convenient given the fly situation. The doors and windows were filled with spiderwebs which I guess are to help capture the flies. Ripped and stained towels and sheets welcomed us. There were safety hazards littered across the property from a taped up broken kitchen window, boarded kitchen door with plywood, axe which the head fell off while chopping, broken pottery shards which we think are the clay tiles from the roof randomly falling off, lever to turn on gas to the stove which pilots had to be lit by match, no oven (listed but not working), no spoons or usable pans other than cast iron, and lake access courtesy of a bent barbed wire fence. We frequent Kern often and are used to critters so the lizard we caught inside was not an issue but the swarm of flies and mice defecting on our belongings has not been encountered by us at any other of the other properties we frequent often.

Breath of Fresh Air!

This place was a great place for a big group and for dogs! Plenty of room and such a beautiful view of the lake! The homeowner/groundskeeper were helpful and they were very accommodating! Plenty to do nearby with the lake and the river, both only a short drive away

Very responsive, but we had so many issues.

Pests: Many Bees were swarming. We were told they’d had to remove a beehive recently, but the bees in the area must have been seeking water, because it wasn’t a problem until we used the hose. Shortly after that, the bees began swarming on the other side of the house, as well. The owner was very responsive and called someone to address the problem. The guy came out the next day, and removed the start of a wasps’ nest, but they could not locate any source of where the bees were coming from. The last day the bees had returned and were again in front and back patio. We appreciated the property caretaker telling us they had just recently captured and killed 2 rattle snakes. They advised us to be careful. They tried to take care of the ants for us. Spiders were found in the house. Need to update the advertising on views and access to Lake Isabella: There are currently pictures of the Lake on their profile of the house. A couple of weeks prior to our trip I was told there was no longer a lake in front of the house. It was completely dried up, but is still had pretty views of the valley. Maintenance: Not all the doors were able to be locked (one of the bedrooms won’t lock from outside). There was only one set of keys. Also, there is no access to a washer and dryer. The can opener was unable to work. They were super responsive and ran one up to us. They also went out of their way to bring us a blender. When the coffee maker took literally an hour to brew one pot of coffee, the owner said she would reimburse us for a coffee maker we had to end up buying. After finding the ants, they brought a new can of Ant Killer it to us. Air Conditioning Issues: The South side of the house’s A/C worked fine, but we had issues with the other side. During our trip, the house was very hot, as the A/C couldn’t keep up with the 100-degree temperatures. The A/C was turned on once we arrived at the house, so the house was very hot, and it had a hard time trying to keep up. The A/C stopped working one night, and the half of us staying on the North side of the house couldn’t sleep because it was so hot there. Some of our issues could have been avoided if we were advised to turn the A/C off, let it rest for an hour, then restart it. We were told the pipes probably froze. I couldn’t reach the owner because her mailbox was full. The caretaker did not know about this trick, either so could not advise us appropriately. The next day we got it to work.

Country livin great for large groups

This rental was great for our large family. Most of the rooms have their own bathrooms which is nice for multiple families or groups staying together. The kitchen was a great size and had all the things needed for cooking at home. The AC was a little finicky but we figured it out after one hot night. It’s definitely country living and make sure to keep all doors closed, but the views in the morning are amazing. Loved the little courtyard and size of the property. Only things: this property hasn’t been lake front for like 10 years (what the locals say) so don’t expect that but it’s a close ish drive. The furniture is a little old- there was a broken chair and the sofas are on their last leg. Also one of the baths the water comes out orange.. but we had a great time in all. Property manager was really friendly and responded fairly quickly.

Great place for a family glamping getaway

This was exactly what I was looking for our family getaway. A big house in a private location with beautiful views all around. The house is huge with lots of great amenities. The lake and river spots are 20 to 30 minutes drive away. We normally camp in the kernville area but with a 1 year old we decided to do a little glamping here instead. Definitely coming back in the future.

Not what you’d expect

While this house is secluded and spacious the experience we had with the owner and the house was not great. The house was not as clean as one would expect for a rental home (especially during COVID) and for the amount of the cleaning fee charged . Multiple beds had dust all over them and hair was found as if they were never washed. If you like spiders you’re in for a treat. There were cobwebs throughout the inside and outside of the house with spiders everywhere. The toilets that appeared to not have been cleaned for a long period of time with brown scum throughout (the owner states this is due to water deposits). One of the worst experiences we had were with the multiple rats found throughout the home. We stayed up until 1 AM trying to trap a rat into the bathroom so we could attempt to sleep soundly. The rats also got into our food in the kitchen and multiple rat droppings were found throughout the house. I don't believe the cost represents what you will most likely get. After explaining our experience the owner was apologetic and stated, “I am so sorry to hear this. Yes of course we will offer a refund.” She then stated “Can I have your address and I will send you a check.” 3.5 months later we have yet to receive a check.

Some Good/Some Bad

The air conditioner only worked in half the house, which left the other half very uncomfortable to sleep in during the summer nights. No window screens to open windows to cool off unconditioned part of house during nights. House is known to have rattlesnakes right outside of courtyard, which we in fact encountered and killed one. Other than that the house is beautiful and secluded. Beautiful view. Very spacious house.

Awesome location!!

This property is huge with lots of room and awesome view. We went during July. We had problem with A/C working only in master bedroom and living room. When we told the caretaker, she brought four fans for us. It wasn’t sufficient and we had a very bad time because of heat. We couldn’t sleep properly. All the wooden furniture ( dining table, extra chairs in the living room) were old and not sturdy. Owner already told us about the bugs and flies because of countryside but it was too much. Even though we had the doors closed all the time, bugs were everywhere.

Cool estate on top of a hill

This is a beautiful get away property with plenty of beds. However, if you're expecting a 4star hotel this is not it. It's an older property with spiders and mice and when the winds hit, the whole house shakes and rattles. The door handle came off and the doors rattle! Depending on who is in your group it's something to consider. Another downside was that you could not walk to the lake, there was barbed wire up everywhere. The house itself was wellkept, and the host met us with the key. I found it to be a nice secluded getaway with friends.
