About this property

The Villa at Tin Can Acres, a Retro Trailer Retreat

Step back in time and experience the beauty and tranquility of simpler days on our 11-acre, mostly-wooded homesite. The 1959 Imperial Villa is one of the largest and most luxurious trailers produced by Spartan Aircraft Co. This fully-restored vintage park model (10'x45', triple axle) offers all the comforts of home with amazing original mid-century modern furnishings. Constructed of aircraft aluminum, the all-original interior is birch accented by walnut and brass. Almost all the furnishings are period pieces, fascinating to see and experience -- like entering a hands-on museum from the 1950s. Nestled in the trees and surrounded on all sides by curtained windows, the interior living space has an open, yet cozy feeling. There's a full-sized bathtub/shower, a full-sized & fully equipped kitchen (though it is not fully stocked with food), an on-demand hot water heater, and a two-ton heat pump which thermostatically controls the climate. Internet is available through the TCA Wifi.

Bedroom:
Surrounded by windows on three sides, the bedroom has a comfortable full-sized (double) bed. There is plenty of closet/storage space in the bedroom and more storage in the middle room.

Bathroom:
The bathroom has all original pink fixtures, including a full-sized tub with shower. Towels, wash cloths, toilet paper, etc. are on the shelves behind the curtain.

Middle room:
The beautiful mid-century modern stereo console has a turntable and an AM/FM receiver. The original instructions for the console are displayed on the console itself, and I can give you further instructions if you desire. Along with the stereo we have a list of more than 350 vinyl albums for your listening enjoyment. (The available albums are listed at the conclusion of this description.)

The mid-century modern hutch in the middle room also houses a variety of vintage dinnerware patterns. In addition to those pieces on display in the upper part of the cabinet, there are many more pieces behind the lower doors. All of these are available for your use and enjoyment.

The dove-tailed walnut veneer drawers contain a first-aid kit (in the upper left-hand drawer), extension cords, vintage massage and exercise equipment, as well as available storage. The larger storage doors provide further storage with hangers and a vintage vacuum cleaner and tools.

Kitchen:
The all-electric kitchen is fully furnished with period pieces, including the vintage stove and refrigerator. Period glasses and everyday dinnerware are in the cabinets above the countertops and above the stove. There is a built-in cutting board below the wood countertop and above the bank of drawers (to the right as you are facing the sink). Those drawers house your silverware, knives, mid-century kitchen tools and gadgets, dish towels, foil and plastic wrap, etc. In addition to the vintage pots on the top of the stove, there are newer pots and pans in the drawer under the oven.

A small microwave is in the cabinet above the refrigerator, as is a more modern coffee maker (if you don’t want to use the vintage percolator on the counter). There are more vintage kitchen tools (waffle iron, ice crushers, slicers, etc.) in the cabinet to the right of the refrigerator, as well as storage/pantry space for cans/dry goods.

The refrigerator has a small freezer at the top where we can leave ice or you can make your own with our vintage ice cube trays. There will also be bottled and/or filtered water in the refrigerator as the Denison water is not very tasty. In keeping with the period, the freezer compartment is not frost-free. That means you will begin to see frost developing inside the freezer over the course of your stay. Welcome to the 50s!

Under the sink behind the left-hand cabinet door there is a fire extinguisher; the trash can is behind the right-hand cabinet door. Should you fill up that trash bag, you may place it in the large metal can outside (located to the right of the red tractor seats near the other Spartan trailer to the west). There will be additional plastic trash bags in the bottom of the plastic trash can. If you ever need assistance with any of this, we are happy to oblige.

In addition to the living space, you are welcome to enjoy our outdoor seating areas, the picnic table, the hammock, ping-pong table, basketball hoop, two cruiser bikes and a trike, a see-saw and the larger playground on the other side of the house. We also have a portable fire pit and plenty of wood, though we ask that you only use the fire pit in open spaces (not under the trees) for safety reasons. The property has peach, apple and pear trees and a few small blackberry bushes, which you are welcome to enjoy in-season -- if you can get to the fruit before the animals! The Imperial Villa sits on our 11-acre, mostly wooded homesite, and you are welcome to hike/explore the surrounding area.

The exterior of the trailer has motion-activated lights for your safety and convenience, and we have four exterior solar LED fixtures for lighting the grounds. These ground lights can be moved for your convenience. The trailer itself also has exterior running lights and string lights in the trees. These are controlled by the upper switch to the left of the front door in the living room.

Living room:
The television picks up six local channels (depending on the weather and your positioning of the antenna). There is a DVD player with a selection of period DVDs (i.e., shows/movies from the mid-twentieth century or whose subject matter is about the mid-twentieth century).

There are two radios in addition to the stereo console -- one in the living room and one in the hall leading to the bedroom. They are both fully functional for am/fm reception. The one in the living room is equipped with a 1/8” jack to use with your phone or mp3 player or portable cd player. The one in the hallway must be turned to “phono” if you want to play your own music through it. The “phono” switch is on the back of the radio.

Parking:
Follow the driveway to the left of any parked cars, driving past the house and curving around toward the trailers. There will be a concrete pad in front of the garage on your right where you can park, or continue straight past the concrete pad and pull up closer to the picnic table (if you want to park as close as possible to the trailer). The Spartan Imperial Villa trailer is straight ahead with the two turquoise chairs in front of it.

Outside Activities:
If you hike the property, you may encounter thorns and burrs and poison ivy and chiggers and fire ants. There is little in the way of paths, and most of these are overgrown. We rarely see snakes, armadillos, possums, raccoons, skunks, owls, bobcats and coyotes; we always see squirrels and rabbits and many birds. You will often hear "noises in the night" within the trailer, from crickets outside to squirrels on the roof to birds flying into the windows. You shouldn't see any mice or other rodents, thanks to our three cats who roam outside our house by day and spend the night in our garage. No pets have been allowed inside the trailer due to family allergies.

An incredibly charming relic!

The Villa was the perfect home base for my trip to the area for my alma mater Austin College’s homecoming weekend. It’s a mid-century time capsule. Every little detail in this place was so cool - I especially loved the Philco stereo, the old car magazines from the era, and the history of the trailer model and its construction. The hosts were wonderful, and I definitely know I’ll be back next time I’m here.

Quiet and private

I could not have found a better place to stay during the Covid epidemic. It's kind of scary traveling these days but going to Tin Can Acres was a great decision. Steve was very proactive and reactive to all questions. I would certainly stay again, and recommend their lovely spot to anyone.

Provided a perfect retreat!

Private and quiet, very well-kept. They provided everything we needed. They found the perfect balance between making sure we had all the information we needed and giving us space and privacy. Sitting and listening to the rain on the roof was a wonderful and peaceful way to spend a weekend! Thank you so much!!!

Amazing Experience!!

Amazing experience. We had the most wonderful time at Tin Can Acres! It honestly felt like being at home. Everything was clean and well stocked with bedding, towels, paper products and even had snacks, water and half n half if you decided to make coffee. The full sized bathroom was wonderful. And everything worked perfectly including the hot water. There are dishes, cups and utensils in the kitchen in the event you want to cook, or just want your take out to have a more home made feel. The trailer is only 10 mins from a Starbucks, Culver’s and gas station. And about 15 from McDonald’s, Jalepeño Tree, Braum’s and other assorted restaurants and fast food places. So convenient. You won’t regret booking this get away. We will definitely return to Tin Can Acres in the future!

Oh my gosh!!! This was the best place we have ever stayed at. We had so much fun opening the cabinets and seeing all the vintage treasures. Very clean and cool even in the middle of summer. The turntable was such a fun extra for us! We listened to hours of Patsy Cline and drank coffee like we were movie stars. So much fun!!! We will definitely be back!!!!

This is a great honey of a place to stay. Great Host! Great Charm! I would go back tomorrow! This was the perfect retreat for a creative writing getaway. Not far from town if you need to grab dinner out, but definitely perculate some coffee in this completely furnished 1959 kitchen. Such a TREAT!

Wonderfully unique home! We highly recommend this amazing experience!

My husband and I spent Labor Day weekend as this wonderfully unique home and had an amazing visit! From the moment we arrived on the property we felt welcomed and comfortable. The home is exactly as described and shown in the pictures. It was well cared for and very clean. We felt as if we had stepped back in time as we read Time magazines from the 60's and listened to Sinatra on the phonograph. The home features many, many items of this time period: the blow dryer, the percolator (for making coffee), and even a pink toilet! Steve and Carrie were fantastic hosts and provided us with a few snacks in addition to sharing their extensive record collection. They are very friendly hosts but also allowed just the two of us to spend the weekend together. I feel that some may be leary of renting this home because it is a trailer. Let me reassure you that this home is roomy, clean, and well maintained. There were no issues with hot water, cold air conditioning, or electricity. The bed, couch, and other furniture were comfortable. The only aspect of the stay that reminded us that we were sleeping in a trailer was the peaceful, muted sound of crickets and owls outside our windows. Denison offered plenty of activities to keep us busy for three days: the local high school football game, the Saturday morning Farmers Market, local shops/boutiques, dinner and gambling at Choctaw Casino (about a 25 minute drive), jet skiing at Lake Texoma (about a 20 minute drive), eating at local restaurants, and attending a Beatles tribute band show at the local theatre. The locals were friendly and helpful. The country roads were well maintained and offered lots of beautiful scenery. This home also provided relaxing options like playing board games, watching movies, or dancing outside by the light of the fireflies. We highly recommend that you consider this home and this special opportunity to experience the 50's/60's time period as well as visit the Denison area.

Surprise retreat nestled in the trees

Tin Can Acres is a gem. A perfectly curated homage to the 50's and 60's. Shades of my childhood. The nice thing is, you get to use everything if you wish, even the LP record player. Surprisingly spacious yet cozy and very comfortable. We loved it and will make "The Villa" at Tin Can Acres our go to spot when we are in the area again!

Charming and cozy!

The home is charmingly decorated true to the1950-1960 period. It is very cozy in an area that is convenient to get to and yet you still feel you are out in the country in a more remote location. It is beautifully situated in trees. I thought that it was very cozy and comfortable. I stayed for an extended time and the owners were always very gracious, kind and friendly. I would definitely recommend this one!

About the host

Hosted by Steve Stell

Host profile image
Vintage Trailer Addiction (VTA) is a serious illness. It is particularly dangerous because the early symptoms are not readily detectable until the disease has progressed and taken hold of the patient’s vital resources (e.g., thought processes, time, energy, finances). I know. My name's Steve, and I'm a Vintage Trailer Addict.

Like so many others, I slowly and unwittingly walked down this addictive path. My gateway to addiction began when Carrie and I restored a beautiful home in the historic district of Flemington, New Jersey back in the 1980s. It was a great experience, except that the house had no wheels so we couldn't take it with us.

When we moved to Sherman, Texas in 1990 in order for me to teach Christian Theology at Austin College, we immersed ourselves in raising and homeschooling our three children and pursuing my calling to teach. Though my fledgling trailer addiction was not causing problems, I realize in retrospect that I was simply holding it at bay by the frantic pace of our existence. (This is sometimes referred to as “white-knuckling it” in VTA recovery circles.) When our antique-filled home burned to the ground in 1995, we focused on the design and re-building process, further forestalling the full-blown emergence of my disease.

The first recognizable symptoms of VTA appeared when my brother was searching for a way to live on some land down in Terlingua, Texas. In that process we stumbled upon a couple of vintage trailer sites and the book Silver Palaces by Douglas Keister. Immediately, I was awe-struck –- the captivating curves, the sensual pleasure of wood grains and polished metals, the quality craftsmanship, the form-follows-function embodiment of natural beauty. Though I told myself I was just helping my brother, there were deeper longings being cultivated and expressed. Now, eight trailers later (four 1950s Spartans, a 1960 and a 1969 Airstream, a 1965 Streamline, and a 1963 Avion), I still regularly attend my VTA recovery meetings!

What makes this property unique

The Spartan Imperial Villa is the luxury model of vintage trailers -- 10 feet wide and 45 feet long. After World War II, the demand at J. Paul Getty's Spartan Aircraft Co. in Tulsa, Oklahoma decreased rapidly, and he decided to construct luxury trailers using the same construction techniques with which they built airplanes. Although Airstreams are the best-known vintage trailer, there is nothing superior in quality to the Spartans. This model has a birch interior with walnut veneers and brass accents. The cabinetry is all high quality with dove-tailed joints. This particular model is cozy, rather than cramped and actually has a warm, spacious feeling to it. We have furnished it with period pieces throughout so, as our guests have noted, it's like living in a fully-functional, hands-on museum from the 1950s/60s. It is a quiet comfortable space that serves as a peaceful retreat.

We also have a beautiful mid-century modern stereo in the middle room and 350+ albums available for your listening enjoyment. There is a list of the albums in the trailer that you can choose from, or I'll be glad to email the list to you as an attachment and then have your selected albums waiting for you in the trailer.
