Quiet retreat

Tucked the woods on the “quiet side” of the island. This cottage has so much lovingly crafted detail. Ideal for two people, but can be for four. The second bedroom and bath are in the walk-out lower level. Super dog friendly, but the owner requests that dogs be leashed on the property to protect her extensive gardening and that they stay off the furniture. The decor is eclectic and artistic and the place has a very full shelf of books to choose from. If you bring your dog, be sure to check out Little Long Lake park. We all loved it!

Quirky, Convenient, and Quiet

We had a lovely week at this house. It was very quiet and private as it was set back in the woods. We saw some deer around the property. The piano was wonderful. We had the windows open the entire time. The air is so clean here! Every day we went out either for dinner or an activity. I’ve had our dog with us and she loved visiting here.

Slate house

Initially disappointed. Foul musty odor upon entrance. Not air conditioned/ wasn’t aware of this. Owner acknowledged having sump pump problems and quickly got this repaired. Had problems w gas stove and no use of oven but able to make it work. House was quaint but lower bedroom had spiders I had to kill and moldy shower curtain. Owner was very nice. Had to go out to buy bounce sheets and candles to help house smell better. Would look for different home to stay in if would return.

Perfect quiet cabin

Property was perfect for stay on the Quiet Side. You feel like you are in middle of the woods, just sounds of nature. Cabin was clean and well appointed, Cherie was very responsive to all communication. Very easy access to harbor towns and west side Acadia trails.

Quiet Location

Beautiful handcrafted home in a very rural and quiet setting. Wonderful and relaxing to return to after a day of exploring Acadia and surrounding areas. Everything you need is provided. Great water pressure, comfortable sleeping and just a charming home. Cherie is wonderful and friendly and easily accessible if need be. The visit from the porcupine wandering through the property was a pleasant surprise.

Cozy and quiet stay at the Slate House

Cherie's place was wonderful! My husband and I spent four nights here for our visit to Acadia and loved it. It is tucked back in the woods on a beautiful property and was very quiet and peaceful, which was lovely to come back to every evening after the hustle and bustle of the park and Bar Harbor. The kitchen was very well equipped and we cooked lots of our meals at the house. Cherie was an excellent host and was very communicative and happy to answer any questions. Would love to stay again the next time we visit the area.

Slate House is fantastic!

We had a wonderful time staying at the Slate House. Cherie is providing a house that is relaxing and surrounds you with everything you need to feed your spirit! The house itself is very special. The house is nestled in the woods with perennial gardens. Within the house you will be surrounded by art. The house itself is situated just 3 miles from the Southwest Harbor and within 3 miles of Acadia west island hiking trails. You will be a max of a 20 minutes drive to the Acadia National Park Beach entrance. Thank you to Cherie for sharing her house.

Lovely Retreat on the Quietside

From the moment I drove down the gravel drive to Cheri's hideaway, I just knew my stay would be wonderful. The acres of pines and birches, the hillsides filled with gardens welcomed me with beauty. Cheri is a delightful homeowner, kind and giving and her home is designed and decorated with her artistic flair. Everything one could need or want is provided for and more. We enjoyed all of the art on the walls and the views out of the many windows. It was so enjoyable seeing the garden blossoms emerge each day. I would highly recommend this little piece of paradise.

Tranquil, beautiful home on the quiet side of Mt Desert Island

This is a beautiful, well cared for and loved, home-- both tucked away and peaceful and yet so very close to all the Acadia attractions -- the best of both worlds! Cherie is a wonderful host, an amazing artisan, and generous with very useful 'insider' tips to make your stay on the island perfect. We were only able to stay 6 days, but in that time, hiked, kayaked, swam, and rode our bikes-- and our only regret is not having more time to spend just relaxing in and around the house! This house, like the beautiful jewelry Cherie makes, is a gem! The trick is finding time available! We will definitely return!

A lovely and unique home off the beaten path

The Slate House is everything you’d imagine for a perfect quiet vacation. It’s off the radar 2 miles from Bass Harbor which is a charming village on “The Quiet Side” of Mt Desert Island. Factor in Southwest Harbor being 5 miles away and there are enough amenities to keep anyone engaged, from boat and sailing charters, to kayaking, to shops and restaurants. Oh yeah, the weather is ideal, 60’s at night an mid 70’s in the daytime Cheri, the owner couldn’t be a more perfect host, as well as delightfully engaging.

Relaxing & quiet

We visited Acadia & couldn’t have found a better place to stay that suited us. It is a short 30 minute drive to Cadillac Mountain, 5 minutes to Bass Harbor light house & several wonderful restaurants within a 10 minute drive. It was the perfect place to come back to after a long day out and have a nice, quiet, cozy & beautiful home to relax in at the end of the day. The hostess, Cherie was so kind & helpful.

Beautiful, relaxing home base

The Slate House is a beautiful, thoughtfully-designed home with an amazing kitchen and very spacious living areas. Unlike many vacation places we've stayed, the living room furniture is genuinely comfortable. The grounds are lovely and verdant, and the gardens are colorful. Cherie was a great host, always quick to respond when we needed anything, generous with herbs from her garden, friendly, and also respectful of our privacy. We've already booked a return stay next summer.

Great spot to visit Acadia No Crowds

This was our first VRBO experience and it was fantastic. The cottage was spacious, clean, and had everything we needed if we wanted to cook. Our host, Cherie, was lovely and very friendly. Southwest Harbor is nice and chill with still easy access to Acadia. Glad we didn’t stay in Bar Harbor, too touristy.

Perfect location for South MDI trips

We loved our stay at the Slate house. Close to Bass Harbor and the historic lighthouse(highly recommend the boat tour out of bass Harbor). Wonderland trail had wonderful tide pools and was less than 10 minutes away. A bit of a drive if you're looking to spend time in Bar Harbor or head to the Schoodic Peninsula, but it was perfect for us.

About the host

Host profile image
As you can see in the photo collage above, I love the outdoors and spend much of my time (when I'm not working in my studio) hiking and kayaking in Acadia, relaxing with friends and perusing my rather sizable garden, in which I grow most of my own food and maintain a varied perennial, tree and shrub landscape. I have been a full-time working artist since 1972 and have lived in Maine since 1974, first in Washington County and then to Mt. Desert Island in 1982.

Why they chose this property

When I moved to Mt. Desert Island from Washington County, Me in 1982, I was already very involved in the artistic community and wanted to find a piece of land here on which I could build my home. With several other artist friends, I bought property which we then divided into separate lots, mine being about 4.5 acres on which I personally built my own cabin, then my studio and house followed in 1999 and 2004 respectively. My involvement in the Island's artistic life included co-ownership of Island Artisans Gallery (from 1983 - 2015, 32 years!) in Bar Harbor, as well as working in my own studio. I had for years also been an avid organic gardener and have been thrilled to have the land to work....

What makes this property unique

One of the great and fun aspects of my home is everything that happened long before I actually built it: for years I have collected re-cycled building materials, odd bits and pieces that I thought might go into a house someday. The flooring upstairs came out of an abandoned woolen mill in Lewiston, Me.; the slate siding on the house was salvaged from a roof in Portland, Me. - so much of what I see every day in the house has a story and a memory for me.
