About this property

Mark Anthony - Hilltop Medieval Escape with Panoramic View

Casa Spello's convenient location in the heart of the historic center and its outstanding panoramic views are what makes this historic medieval property one of the most desirable in the region.

Over 500 years old, Casa Spello is a newly renovated medieval property, located in the historic center of Spello, a hillside village with a rich history which predates Roman times. The property, nestled within the ancient city walls, boasts one of the most panoramic views in all of Spello; on a clear day, you can see the church towers of Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Foligno and the rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards which surround Spello. Our large garden/orchard, surrounded by an 1800 year old Roman wall, is an ideal setting for al fresco dining, sunset watching over a glass of Montefalco wine, or sipping coffee before the day's adventures.

Casa Spello was restored by a local architect to provide it with all the modern amenities, while preserving its genuine medieval ambiance. It once was a home with two large 'cantinas' (cellars) where the family used to make wine and press their olive oil. It is now available for rent on a short-term or long-term basis.

Originally it was built with hand carved mountain stone - a beautiful peach color stone which came from the nearby Subasio mountain.

This large 1 bedroom / 1 bath stone unit is on two levels, and sleeps up to 4. A glass enclosed loft serves as the master bedroom above the beautiful living room. The large vaulted kitchen is furnished with rustic furniture and antique ceramics from nearby Deruta, and is fully equipped for your cooking pleasure. It has direct access to the large shared garden.

For larger parties, the Mark Anthony (1 BR, sleeps 4) and Cleopatra (large studio, sleeps 3) apartments can be opened to each other. This creates a contiguous space of approximately 1,300 square feet.

A beautiful, historic and spacious apartment

We thoroughly enjoyed our 7 night stay at Mark Anthony apartment in May. Spello is a very special town and the apartment is close to everything. Gina, the owner, provided lots of information for our stay, and the "greeter", Nadia, was so helpful and kind. Loved the washing machine! And the layout of the apartment is very comfortable and practical. I had forgotten how "hilly" Spello is and had some issues with my mobility, but as Gina says "the views make up for the climb!" Would highly recommend.

Charming, comfortable apt.great space & views

We booked for several months (2018 & 2019) in Marc Anthony and were extremely happy with our accomodations. The medieval apt is fully equipped & comfortable. The location to upper active Spello is very close yet still has private gardens with fantastic valley & sunset views. They were accomodating & responsive if we needed anything. Also provided info on places to eat, go & tour. Spello is in central Italy & Umbria. 2 hrs to Rome or Florence, lots of medieval towns for day trips with train station walking distance. Reliable Taxi & car rentals also recommended by Gina. We would definitely stay again.

An enchanting getaway

This apartment that opens into the charming garden is lovely and very private. It is comfortable, roomy, spotless and beautifully appointed. The town of Spello itself has a great deal to offer and is not overrun by tourists - you can feel like a local! It is big enough to have great amenities but small enough to feel comfortable. Gina's recommendations as to the best butcher, bakery and restaurants were spot on. Do not miss the aqua duct walk especially in the morning, have cappuccino in Collepino then drive (or walk) up Mont Subasio for stunning views. The many wineries in the area are varied but all have welcoming staffs who speak English and are thrilled to talk about their products. There is so much to do in the valley between Spoleto and Perugia and the train service is excellent. I would not hesitate to highly recommend any of the apartments in Casa Spello. Gina and Nadia took excellent care of us and we look forward to returning.

Charming Spello

Lovely spot. Close to all the typical tourist sites but also many hidden gems. Fantastic quaint villages to hike and bike to. Great restaurants in town. Apartment was lovely and well appointed but may be a bit of a challenge if you have mobility issues.

Fantastic house, fantastic setting, fantastic town, fantastic people

Our family (two adults, two typically often-hard-to-please teenagers) had a brilliant time at Casa Spello, in Spello generally and in Umbria broadly. Beautiful and character-ful house, astonishingly beautiful town, wonderful scenery, great visiting/holiday option within an easy drive, and lovely, lovely food. The people, especially the locals who helped with the house, were all wonderful.

Wonderful location in beautiful Spello

We stayed for 7 nights at Casa Spello and loved Spello. The apartment was wonderful and had everything that we needed and the garden and views were fantastic. Spello has lots of great restaurants and shops and is a good point to access other places in Umbria like Assisi and Montefalco.

Casa Spello great base for Umbrian holiday

Via Mura Vecchi No. 1, Angolo Borgo di Via Giuglia, Spello , Perugia (Umbria), 06038, Italy Apartment: Marc Antony My wife and I stayed in the Marc Anthony apartment in Casa Spello for four weeks in January 2016. Although it was winter time, we were very comfortable in this cosy apartment. It is very well appointed and we had everything we needed for the sort of holiday we prefer - having a home base where we can prepare our own food, set out on day trips and return at the end of the day to a comfortable home. The owner, Gina, provided clear instructions and offered lots of suggestions for dining and sightseeing opportunities. With its two bedrooms, the apartment was big enough to be comfortable even when our son and daughter-in-law visited for a couple of days. There is only one bathroom, so for a longer stay with more than two guests, one of the other apartments in the building might be preferable. The thick stone walls kept us warm and we rarely used the central heating. Coming from a warm part of Australia, we are not accustomed to central heating, and only turned it on a few times to warm the place, then turned it off again. The beds are comfortable and there are plenty of blankets and duvets. Spello has many advantages compared to other towns we visited, as it is not only very charming and attractive, but it is also quite lively. Even in the middle of winter there were plenty of shops and restaurants etc open for business, and lots of movement in the streets and bars, particularly on the weekends. Many other places we visited were much quieter. The weather was kind and allowed us to go on lots of walks. Some were long walks to neighboring towns, but it was also possible to head out along any of the small roads outside the town and enjoy the beautiful countryside. As Spello is on the train line, it is possible to take trips to Rome, Perugia and further afield. Some days we stayed home and enjoyed relaxing in the apartment, strolling around the town and even enjoying lunch or aperitivo on the terrace. The apartment offers views across the valley. The garden would be lovely in the warmer seasons, I am sure. It is difficult to be far from anything in a small hill town, but Casa Spello is very centrally located, with restaurants, shops and bars just around the corner. It is also very quiet and peaceful, as it is situated on the edge of town, with no close neighbors below, and no through traffic. Strongly recommended!

I am a human rights advocate. I live in San Francisco, California. I have been awarded several prizes for my human rights work. The work I do for human rights is pro-bono. My husband and I travel all over the world. I speak English, Italian, Francais, Espanol and I love hosting people from all over the world in my Casa Spello. I have family in Italy and family in the USA. My husband Dan has a property management company based in San Francisco, but he lets me manage Casa Spello. He is also involved in civil rights causes and served as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in India for two years. Of course when I have serious issues with Casa Spello regarding a frozen pipe or anything to do with the building, I consult with him. But I deal with all the bureaucracy in the Italian government offices.

Casa Spello for us is a "labor of love" and a pride of ownership.

Why they chose this property

My husband Dan and I bought this property because we fell in love with its magnificent views and the fact that it was built in hand carved stones from the nearby Subasio Mountains.

Spello took us under its spell and in fact this medieval villas has recently been declared by Smarter Travel as one of 11 of the most beautiful secret villages in Italy.

What makes this property unique

The property offers breathtaking sunsets from our windows and sweeping views from our beautiful garden. Sunset watching in our garden enjoying a glass of local wine and an appetizer is a must and this is what our guests love the most. The inside of the units are in hand carved peach color stone which gives the interior a warm glow. This warm soft light creates a very romantic atmosphere.
