About this property

Historic hillside cottage in Tuscan Appennines 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6-8

Beautiful, historic hillside cottage in a tiny, peaceful hamlet in the Tusco-Emilian Appenines between Bologna and Florence.

Recommended for foodies, foragers, families, wild swimmers, walkers and people with a spirit of adventure who want to experience an authentic glimpse of rural Italy in one of the last corners of Tuscany/Emilia still untouched by tourism.

This rustic, C18th stone house has chestnut-wood floors and ceilings, antique furniture and bedrooms with luxury-standard linen, lots of outside space and stunning mountain views. It's in an idyllic mountain setting away from tourism. The hamlet and its traditional way of life has been unchanged for hundreds of years.

Outside there are patios, terraced gardens and a tiny orchard all surrounded by chestnut woodland. You can read more here: http://italycottage.weebly.com/

The house is within 10 mins of village shops and a train station and is within easy reach of Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Bologna (all 1hr or less), and 25kms from Pistoia. The small road leading to the house from the main road is a steep drive (about 1km). The property is a home, not hotel. It is quirky. More here: http://italycottage.weebly.com/

Wild swimming: there are a profusion of wild swimming options close to the house, including streams, waterfalls and plunge pools in the woods surrounding the house and, five minutes' away, a large river (Reno) with small peddly beaches along its shores. A lake half an hour away has small beaches, pedalos, cafes and sail boats for hire. There is also a large open-air swimming pool with sun loungers in nearby Porretta.

Ski, walking, hiking: There are 3 ski resorts close to the house. Abetone, 30 kms away, is the best in the Appenines with stunning views of Emila and Tuscany. It has an extensive network of slopes mainly for intermediate level skiers. Closer but smaller are Lizzano in Belvedere and Corno alle Scale. The Appennines have an excellent network of marked trails and mountain refuges organised by the Italian Alpine Club. A recognised national footpath passes by the house and takes walkers to as high as 1441m to mountain ridges offering stunning panoramic views of Emilia and Tuscany. From one local peak, visitors can see both coasts of Italy and as far as Mont Blanc!

Food and drink: Emilia Romagna is Italy's finest culinary region, home of balsamic vinegar, parmesan cheese and parma ham, and Tuscany is known for its fantastic wine, making this house perfectly placed for foodies. The excellent food market every Saturday in near-by Porretta attracts producers from both regions. Excellent wine can also be found in all local enoteche (specialist wine bars). Because of the area's superb culinary traditions, there are a profusion of food festivals (sagre) all year round, ranging from chestnut sagre to the famous white truffle sagre, held in Marradi, about 1hr from the house, in Autumn. In the summer local sagre in near-by villages include polenta, wild boar, venison and ravioli.

It is also a forager's heaven - wild mint, chamomile, bilberries, porcini and chantarelles mushrooms, sorel, woodland fruits...

Festivals and markets: The area is home to many music festivals in the summer, including Italy's best blues and jazz festivals. Pistoia holds the world famous Pistoia Blues festival every July, as well as the Giostra dell Orto, a jousting medieval processing also held in the Summer. Porretta holds the Porretta Jazz festivals each summer, with past guests including the likes of Buddy Guy.
Many local towns also throw medieval parties in the summer - joisting, parades, processions - and Prato has an annual national Comic Book Conference in the spring and Prato Estate (July/August) is a living arts festival including open-air theatre, concerts and films held each year.

Nearby, Pistoia and San Miniato hold large, monthly antique markets and craft festivals. An antique market, often including a stall selling only fascist memorabilia to the strains of military music, as well as antiques and paintings, is held every Sunday in Pracchia's town square (15-minute drive).

Beautiful cottage in a welcoming hamlet

Casa Castagne was a wonderful place to stay and switch off from the rest of the world. It felt like stepping back in time to a place where simplicity and old ways are valued and encouraged. We fell in love with the little hamlet and its tiny piazza. Daniela and Roberta are very friendly and they grow the most delicious array of vegetables. We highly recommend ordering a box- it is a real treat! The cottage is ancient but has everything you need for a comfortable stay. We loved walking to the nearby remote village with its small church and exploring the windy paths and old houses. The ‘beach’ at Molino was great fun and even had a cafe, sun beds etc.. Highly recommended! We would love to return one day.

Great stay in the mountains

We had a lovely time at Casa Castagna. Everything we needed was provided and the instructions for getting to, using, and leaving the house were really good. The area is stunning - you definitely need a car to get around but there are some great walks into the mountains from the front door. We did a day trip to Bologna, getting the train from Porretta Terme, and a day trip to Florence, getting the train from Pistoia. The Coop at Porretta has everything you need but there is a bigger Conad at Pistoia if coming from Pisa. The kids especially loved the swing on the front terrace. It's definitely a foodie region - there were no bad meals on our whole trip!

Authentic, rustic

The traditional house in an historic small village situated in a rather narrow valley is authentically restored. The place is a little remote but very quiet. It is surrounded by a nice forest. Trails starting from the house are steep, but lovely places in the nearby are to be reached by car. A perfect place for nature lover!

Authentieke woning in prachtomgeving

Nice and wild

Old charming house in a small idyllic village with very nice people in the middle of the mountains. Have enjoyed our stay with kids and dogs very much! Especially recommendable for hikers and nature lovers: lots of fauna around - we have seen snakes, scorpions, deer, pheasant, weasel, fat dormouse and many porcupine dens.

Beautifully peaceful

Absolutely delightful. This is the second time we've been, returning this year with more people, including 10-and 12-year-olds who were in heaven, able to clamber freely through the woods. Whenever I'm stressed now I imagine myself back on the terrace listening to the sound of the breeze in the treetops. The fact that the railway line is almost back in full working order is a big plus.

Bello, bello, bello!

Marvelous

Lets cut to the chase. Truly beautiful staying in the mountains with autum colours draped over the landscape. Candida's house fits beautifuly into the landscape. The house itself isnt fancy, nevertheless, it is wonderful. It has all that you need and more: open fire, internet and views. The instuctions regarding the house are comprehensive and Candida has thought of everything, its all there. The house is near a mountain top and on our first night staying there we had a wonderful display of thunder and lightening, all very frightening, truly memorable. The only downside was my inability to cope with driving up the mountains with hairpin bends and Italian drivers! But I got used to it. The people in this area of Italy are truly friendly and helpful The nearby restaurants, 20 minutes a way or so, provide Italian localy sourced food. Candida will give you the names of the restaurants I recomend, she knows whats' what. Bring some good books to read and stought walking boots, enjoy the peace and quiet and the landscape, you will have a wonderful time. David and Simone

Welcoming and peaceful

We had a fantastic time here - eating dinner in the garden under the stars, wandering around the pretty little village, learning about the rich partisan history of the area from locals in the know. The owners gave us a detailed description of the route and it wasn't hard to find. The property was clean and well-maintained. The house feels cosy and welcoming and the views are gorgeous (and there’s an amazing new treehouse in the garden). There's a beautiful man-made lake a 20-minute drive away – perfect for a day out with the kids. Some excellent local restaurants are also easily accessible by car. Not to mention the fabulous local produce and the thermal baths found in nearby Porretta di Terme. The charming medieval town of Lucca is a 30-min drive across the Tuscan border. If you're looking for a tranquil hideaway far from the madd(en)ing crowds, Casa Castagna is for you. We had never been to this region before but will definitely be back. I feel very grateful to the owner for showing us the unique corner of Italy.

About the host

Host profile image
I lived in Emilia Romagna for two years and studied Italian at university. Emilia Romagna is often overlooked by tourists - lucky for those of us who still want to experience untouched Italy. Having said that, Emilia Romagna is too good a secret to keep to myself and I'm delighted to be able to let others experience an authentic glimpse of Italy that is increasingly hard to find in the more well-trodden parts.

Why they chose this property

I have travelled every region of Italy but always come back to Emilia Romagna for its wonderful food, warm, welcoming people, culture and lack of tourists. For me it is the epitome of everything I love about Italy. This house is in a small village where the partisans hid out. The views are stunning, the night skies are filled with stars and the screeching of owls and a stay there is pure medicine for the soul. We love watching the fireflies rise in June and fill the woods with streams of light - it has to be one of the most spectacular natural displays there is. As my children will tell you, there are fairies in the woods! We also love taking the ancient path from our village to a neighbouring village (Olivacci), a 20 minute walk which crosses a stream and is lined by bilberry bushes. Olivacci has a pretty church. We love foraging for mushrooms in our woods and then drying them in the sun, and bringing them back home for fragrant risottos all year round. The kids love the open-air swimming pool in Porretta, my husband and I prefer the nearby river. Either way we can spend all day every day in water if we choose - even in a mountain home. We love that it's a few degrees cooler in the summer than in the valley - so we can top off hot days in Florence with a glass of wine and a breeze on our patio in the evening.

What makes this property unique

Utter peace and quiet. Not a tourist in sight. Excellent wild swimming in nearby lakes, rivers and waterfalls, fantastic foraging opportunities, delicious local restaurants, amazing walks!
