About this property

Cozy Log Cabin Close to Snowshoe, 2 Bedrooms and a Loft

Four wheel drive vehicle required December -March.

Hickory Hill Cabin is located in Slatyfork Farms, a private residential community 3 miles from the entrance to Snowshoe Mountain Resort and about 15-20 minutes from the slopes. Nestled among shag bark hickory trees, it is a great place to retreat to after a day of skiing or snowshoeing in the winter, or hiking, biking, fishing, or canoeing or kayaking in the warmer months. Family and friends can relax in front of the fireplace and, if desired, a satellite TV and DVD player are available. The cabin has a large loft which is great for a couple with small children. the loft has a queen bed and a two single beds. There is also a small TV with a selection of movies for viewing away from the adults downstairs. The main floor has a great room, 2 bedrooms, a full bath, and a half bath. The basement has a sitting area with a foosball table and a bathroom with a shower and washer/dryer.

Hickory Hill Cabin is ideal base for outdoor activities year round. Winter provides downhill and cross country skiing. When the snow is gone mountain biking is available at Snowshoe and at other trails located in Pocahontas County. If you prefer a more sedate ride the Greenbrier River Trail is close by. Known as the birthplace of rivers, Pocahontas County is home to the Greenbrier, Elk, Cranberry, Williams, and Cherry Rivers. These rivers provide many opportunities for fishing as well as canoeing or kayaking. There are also trails for hiking in area. Cass Railroad (14 miles) and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (16 miles) are also fun places to visit. The Cranberry Glades are about 35 miles down the Scenic Highway (Route 150). The drive is beautiful and the Glades area offers hiking and mountain biking.

A land line telephone is available for local and long distance calls. Linens are provided. Although the roads are well maintained in the winter, a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. Internet is not available. WI-FI is available at the Linwood Visitor Center at the turn to go up the mountain to Snowshoe. No password required.

Very well-equipped

Probably the best kitchen equipped rental I've ever experienced. Plenty of cookware and condiments. Bedrooms and living space were very nice. Would recommend to others and would reserve again.

What a great place!

Our family has such a great time staying here. Very convenient to snowshoe and the grocery store in the area. We lucked out and had some snow while we were there too! It is a very relaxing place to spend some time in the mountains.

Bike Weekend Headquarters

This is my third time staying at this property, every stay has been great. Really nice quiet property very close to Snowshoe resort. It's the perfect place to use as a basecamp while in the area to mountain bike. I will be coming back next year for sure!

Snowshoe Cabin

While this cabin is not actually on Snowshoe property, it is close enough to seem like it. It is just a short pleasant drive. We stayed there to go skiing at Snowshoe and it was perfect for us. I would stay there again if we go back to the resort. The cabin and location was just as described and Ruth was always quick to answer any questions we had.

Pleasant Surprise

We had a wonderful stay in this cabin at Slatyfork Farm. Warm and inviting with all the needed amenities. About 10 minuets or so from Snowshoe Mountain Resort, this cabin is a perfect place to stay if you want to be near the resort but like a little bit of distance from your neighbors!

Our stay at Slatyfork

Very nice clean property. Had a small issue with heat but otherwise was great place to stay. I had asked for snow but unfortunately that wasn’t possible.

Has all of the convenience of home. Well thought out in every room. Loft the best!

I would definitely stay here again! No cell or internet service and that is a gift to be embraced. The kitchen was stocked with everything you would need to cook. The decor was lovely and they keep it very nice and clean. Good front porch for your morning coffee. Don’t overlook this cabin.

Ruth’s cabin was perfect for our group of 5 adults.

We were a family meeting from DC, Richmond, and Roanoke. The accommodations were just as stated in the description. It was clean and beds were comfortable. We loved the fireplace and sitting in the living room playing games. Only a 12-15 minutes ride to skiing in Snowshoe. We all drove 4WD/AWD vehicles, it would be difficult in snow/ice to get up the hill to the cabin if you have only 2WD. Would love to stay here again!

Adorable cabin

Although this cabin seemed to be in the middle of nowhere, it was lovely - very well maintained, everything you could possibly need in the kitchen, and the bathrooms and bedrooms were perfect. Very cozy and spacious. It was nice having so many amenities - to include the washer and dryer. The owner was great to work with. The only thing that was difficult for us (especially our teenager and young adult children) was the lack of cell phone service and limited restaurants.

The perfect place!

We considered staying on property at Snowshoe for our recent ski trip, but I'm glad we abandoned that idea and found Ruth's property at Slatyfork Farm instead. It was the perfect spot. The home is very convenient to the slopes, extra clean, peaceful, very comfortable, and Ruth was a very attentive host and easily accessible when we had a few questions. It had everything we needed, towels, sheets, blankets, and extra little kitchen and bathroom things. It was so pleasant to "arrive" and feel right at home. Thank you for making us feel welcome; we will be back!

Spacious, well-stocked & cozy cabin near Snowshoe/Cass

This is our third time staying at Slatyfork Farm but our first time at this property. The cabin was not dissimilar to the other one we stayed at nearby but much cleaner and more spacious. We only used the beds on the main floor for our family of four (includes a toddler still in a pack-N-play) but could've fit many other people both in the loft and downstairs. The kitchen was very well stocked, even including a good coffee grinder! We are used to WiFi but only missed it a little (there's none at the cabin) and mostly enjoyed the chance to truly unplug. We had a little bit of cell service (Verizon) at the cabin. It was our oversight that the place does not have A/C (only heating), but even in late July we didn't need it--the nights were cool and the windows/fans in the cabin allowed for ample airflow. Ruth was a very responsive and attentive hostess, and everything went as smoothly as possible. We would stay here again in the future if returning to the area. The only negative we found (though it didn't affect our overall experience) was that the basement smelled a little musty. However, it is a nice basement that we can tell is being redone thoughtfully, and it only bothered me (not my husband or kids), probably because I have a lot of allergies and am sensitive to smells like that. The biggest positives of this property are its privacy/seclusion and natural setting, plus proximity to Snowshoe and the scenic railroads.

3 nights at slaty fork

Exceeded expectations. Comfortable beds nice stay. The water situation was a bit unexpected. It’s on well water and you have to fill a big tank in basement daily by opening a valve and waiting for it to fill. Wasn’t a big deal for us but might be for others. Great location relative to snowshoe. Overall recommend. We would return.

Awesome cabin close to Snowshoe!

This cabin is absolutely perfect! Ruth was very sweet and easy to communicate with. The cabin is well equipped and the pictures don't do it justice. Perfect for a small family and friends! We will be renting again next season!

Better than expected!

Based off the pictures and descriptions I was expecting the property to be on the smaller side and difficult to access. However, the property had much more space than I was expecting, especially once you factor in the basement and loft. Also, even with the snow and the gravel road to the house we were able to easily access the propetrty with no issues, although I’d reccomend 4wd. We experienced a maintenance issue during our stay which is totally normal for houses to have but Ruth was very helpful and we still had an excellent time. I have Verizon and I had sketchy on and off service while at the house. I’d definitely stay here again or recommend this cabin to families or small groups!

No Wifi, no problem.

Optimistically planned a December Ski Trip with some friends, but unfortunately didn't time it well with a "warm-front" of weather. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because the cabin was clean, well appointed, and a conducive environment to reconnecting with old friends. Everything is as-advertised and would have no hesitation recommending this rental to friends/family.

Cozy clean cabin in the woods!

I have rented through VRBO many times and have to say, this was the cleanest, well stocked cabin I’ve rented! It was nicely decorated, lots of towels and extra blankets, supplies. Lit for Christmas ! 15 min drive to the slopes! Ruth sent well informed emails and responded promptly when I had questions. Highly recommend!

Comfortable Cabin

Cabin was exactly as listed, and the owner was extremely helpful in communicating before our stay to help our group plan out food and activities. The cabin was spacious and had a great front porch to be able to sit on and enjoy the weather. I underestimated the importance of either wifi or cell service. I have Verizon and thankfully we had a band of service while on the drive back to the main road, but lack of either makes it very challenging to plan things out without having access to a separate GPS. The welcome center did have very usable wifi that worked from the parking lot, but finding it was a bit challenging without cell service (even though it is close), so just make sure you have everything planned out ahead of time.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time.

Everything was as good or exceeded our expectations. Suggestions:. Since you have cable, get a package that includes sports and news. The small floor rug in the master bathroom, in front of the sink, is dangerous. It easily rolls up at the edges, slides easily, creating a fall hazard. A rubber backed mat or rug, would not slide and resist rolling up at the rides.
