About this property

Hobie’s Hangout Classic IOP, Beach Front

Sleeps 7 in 5 beds - 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths in upstairs living space. Downstairs family friendly area has a half bath, 2 additional separate apres-beach showers.

Hobie's Hangout is a quaint and comfortable beach house with a "cottage" feel, located ocean front on Isle of Palms. This "old-style IOP" home was built in the 50s and will take you back in time with it's original solid wood tongue-in-groove wood walls (the original beadboard!) and wood plank flooring.

This home is more like a "home stay" versus a true vacation rental as the owners still have many of their belongings here including their walls of family pictures, antiques passed on through the generations, and favorite artwork left to share with guests. Remember, the original AirBnbs were homestays - until investments in lavish rental properties became popular and the short term rental market became what it is today. This is not a lavish home - but it is a well-loved, well-equipped, and has been the primary residence for this family.

Home is located in a residential area - house to the right has permanent residents. House on the left is a large rental property. Noise ordinance (and a hefty fine) prohibits loud music or other disturbances. This is a great spot for families or girls weekend getaways. PARTIES NOT ALLOWED in this home. Beach visitor parking is allowed on the street but you will have 3 parking spaces in the driveway. (Please, no going beyond the driveway - that is where the septic tank is!)

The Isle of Palms Recreation department and their HUGE playground is an easy 5 block walk from the house. There are climbing structures, tennis courts, soccer fields, all first come/first served. It's worth checking their website to find kid-friendly activities during your stay. The IOP Marina is at the north end of the island, where a restaurant is currently being remodeled. The marina store has fun souvenirs and a walk-up food counter with delicious lunch and breakfast items.

This home is Ocean front but there is a bit of a walk behind the house to get to the beach. On any given day you might see a family of deer passing through, or maybe a hawk on the hunt. There is also plenty of good birdwatching!

Two Smart TV's in common areas. There are no TVs in bedrooms.

Upstairs: The upstairs living space is around 1500 square feet. It is small but has a cozy and "open" feel. 4 bedrooms about 10'x12' ea, (bed sizes king, queen, 2 twins, 1 full), two full-sized baths, one with a shower, one with the original mint green tub and fantastic original tile. Living space with comfortable furnishings, eat-in areas include dining area for 6 and bar area for 4. Kitchen fully equipped with cookware, dishes and silverware, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, drip and Keurig coffee makers, tea kettle, as well a s other small appliances.

Off the back side of the living area is an enormous screened-in ocean porch where you can enjoy the sounds of the ocean in 4 oversized rockers or at the teak dining table for 6. Off the porch is an unscreened area and steps to go down to the beach path. PRIVATE BEACH ACCESS right from the house!

Downstairs: Footprint of the home is the same as upstairs but some of the space is being used for owner storage. 2 bedrooms (1 twin and 1 full), a half bath in the twin room. There are two indoor apres-beach showers. There is open space with a ping pong table, washer and dryer, and separate kids TV space,

Out the back door is a covered area with a charcoal grill. There are some beach toys and boogie boards for guest use. There is no grill but you may bring yours to use during your stay. There is a cold-water shower outside.

The house has a septic system. For those unfamiliar with using facilities in a home with a septic, there is signage in the home to remind guests of cautions to be taken. There is no garbage disposal for this reason.

Linens provided for all beds as are bath and beach towels for 8.

No smoking within the footprint of the home - no smoking on porches. Collection of security deposit and/or cost to remediate odor will be incurred if butts and odor are found in or around the property.

Fireplace in the living room. Please check with us before use. Only Press Dried/Kiln Dried wood (such as Duraflame) should be used.

While we try not to impose during your stay, guests can expect one visit during their stay to verify identification and guest parameters. If there are any discrepancies you will be asked to leave.

NO third-party booking is allowed. The guest who makes the reservation must be staying the entire length of the booking.

Wonderful Winter Stay a the Beach

What a great house! Lots of character (in a good way). It felt so comfortable and peaceful. Access to the beach was easy (via a walking path through the dunes), as was the drive into Charleston.

Hobie’s Hangout was perfect for our family of 4!

We are so glad we selected this home for our first trip to South Carolina. I did extensive research to determine which barrier island to go to and which property to stay at, so we didn't make the decision lightly. We loved Isle of Palms in general and chose this home primarily for its direct beach access. It's situated on such a beautiful stretch of beach that wasn't busy and a very easy 1-2 minute walk from the house. It was SO wonderful to be able to go back and forth during the day when we needed to eat or just take a break. The home itself was very comfortable for our family. We had everything we needed during our stay, check in and out was very easy and I appreciated the detailed instructions. They had lots of beach items that we were able to use - chairs, a boogey board, sand toys and I was very happy to see there was a wagon to transport everything. A lot of beach towels were provided which was very nice. I enjoyed looking at all the family photos and art work on the walls - it was very heartwarming to know that they raised their kids there and we were staying somewhere that had so many wonderful memories. We would 100% stay here again and next time we will bring more family since there was more then enough space!

Beach getaway

This property was great for our family. There was enough space for everyone, the ping pong table host many challenges and created many laughs. The back porch was amazing, able to hear the ocean and enjoy nightly hours of conversations.

Great Experience, Host, and House

Our stay at Hobies Hangout at Isle of Palms was wonderful. The location of house being right on the beach made it perfect for our family beach vacation. The house is comfortably furnished and has that old vintage feel to it that I love. We had everything needed. The front porch looking out at the ocean was a favorite spot. Beth, our host, was great in looking after us.

Old school beach house

This beach house felt like we were staying at a family friends house. All the other house Around this one are big and fancy but no personality- just some company dressed them up. Hobies hangout truly felt like the family invited us to visit. The walk to the beach is magical through the dunes. House had everything we needed. Beth was incredibly helpful and attentive- true southern hospitality.

Comfortable and healing

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this classic beach home that we found to be comfortable, a great location, and an easy walk to the beach. The kitchen was well stocked for our cooking needs, and we enjoyed eating inside around the table and also on the screened in porch as we listened to the ocean. The view from the screened in porch and deck is awesome and my husband enjoyed rocking on that deck and reading. The private path to the beach is enfolded by natural shrubs and sea grass that leads you right to the ocean. There is a yard to throw frisbees or a football in, both were there for guests to use as well as a croquet set and other beach games. Fabulous long walks on the beach and we found numerous shells on the beach every morning. Sunrise at IOP is breathtaking. Excellent local restaurants on the island and in Charleston. We also found Sullivan's Island to be quaint and a fun excursion. My sister and I rode bikes throughout this friendly and safe community. Very relaxing time away. Will definitely book another stay here. Very comfortable and healing.

Hobie's Hangout (named after "Hobie" Alter, an innovator of sailing and surfing, inventor of the Hobie Catamaran and many surfboard designs) became home to the current owners almost 30 years ago. They spent these years raising their two children, working, living "island life", and now offer this home for others to create wonderful family memories in the same way they have.

What makes this property unique

Beachfront property! Listen to the waves at night when all is quiet. There is something about the ocean and the perspective it offers. Private walkway to the beach from the home.
