High Desert Test Sites stewards AZ West and is a nonprofit arts institution that supports and fosters experimental artwork in the Joshua Tree region. All proceeds from A-Z West House rentals will support High Desert Test Sight's mission to create a comprehensive nonprofit art institution offering residencies, workshops, exhibitions, and community-engaged public arts programs.
Outdoor Spaces
The home features three distinct outdoor areas, designed to embrace the surrounding landscape:
• Front Patio – Sunken-style benches facing west, perfect for enjoying the sunset.
• Private Enclosed Yard – Features a lounge area, outdoor bed, soaking tub (seasonal), and shower.
• Boulder-Filled Backyard – Includes a fire pit, shaded seating under a palo verde tree, and trails leading into Joshua Tree National Park.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
• The primary bedroom features a king bed, built-in storage, and direct access to a lime-plastered ensuite bathroom with an outdoor shower.
• The second bedroom contains a full bed and a small workspace, with shared access to a large office and a second bathroom with a soaking tub. (Note: This room does not have AC and can be warm in summer.)
Kitchen & Dining
• Fully equipped kitchen with premium appliances and custom-made A-Z Containers for serving and dining.
• Dining table for four, positioned next to a wood-burning stove for cozy meals.
• Essentials like locally roasted coffee, tea, spices, and cooking basics are included.
• Outdoor dining area beneath a mature palo verde tree.
Living Area
• Features the Linear Sequence artwork, a functional sculptural installation designed for lounging, conversation, and contemplation.
• Andrea Zittel’s personal book collection, a record player, and additional artworks are available to explore.
• Large windows frame the stunning desert landscape, and a wood-burning stove adds warmth on chilly evenings.
Guest Access:
Guests will have full access to the home and surrounding property. As A-Z West is an active artistic site, staff and artists-in-residence may be present on the grounds, but your stay remains private. While outdoor art installations are open for exploration, please respect any marked private spaces. Only registered guests are allowed, unless specifically agreed upon during the booking process. Any unannounced guests will be asked to leave and the reservation may be cancelled at will. Also note, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO USE OF OFF HIGHWAY VEHICLES (OHV) IN THIS AREA.
The Neighborhood:
This stunning home is located within A-Z West, adjacent to Joshua Tree National Park. Enjoy easy access to the park’s hiking trails directly from the backyard. Nearby, you’ll find:
• Joshua Tree Village (5 min) – Restaurants, shops, and galleries
• Pioneertown & Pappy & Harriet’s (15 min) – A legendary music venue and Old West-style town
• The Integratron (25 min) – A unique sound bath and wellness experience
Getting Around:
This is a remote location down dirt roads, so please take it slow. While a car is required to get around, a four wheel drive car is not, but note that roads will often have ruts, particularly after a rain.
Other Things to Note:
• Soaking Pool – Not heated; available May–Oct only.
• Staff Availability on AZ West Compound– Limited on-site staff; official tours must be arranged in advance.
• Events & Photoshoots: Not permitted without prior approval and fees.
• Dogs: Welcome with a $100 fee (max 2). Notify us in advance.
• Social Media: Tag us when sharing your experience!
• Cell Service: Coverage varies; enable Wi-Fi calling or use a VOIP app.
• Road Conditions: Dirt roads may have ruts; drive carefully.
