A stay at the cottage is about family and traditions and shared experiences; Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks and sparklers, sand castles and sun burn, lightning bugs and hide and go seek. The house was very comfortable and well stocked. The house is very well thought out. A few more mirrors in rooms would be helpful. Very efficient house. Highly recommend.

Great House

My fiance and I, along with 3 other couples, rented this house over NYE. It was a great house to sit back and relax in with friends. The house was very clean and had everything we needed in order to enjoy our time together. I would recommend to anybody trying to get away for a few days.

Great week in the Blue Cottage!

The Blue Cottage is an absolutely charming vacation rental! We loved all the special touches in the rooms. We had coffee every morning on the front screened-in porch and cocktails in the evening in the shaded backyard. We were able to eat several of her meals on the picnic table under in the shaded backyard, too. One of the best stocked homes we’ve rented. we had all the information we needed prior to arriving, so check in, and check out were very smooth. Highly recommend!

All You Need Are Your Clothes!

This is the most well-stocked and clean rental we have ever expeienced. Rickie has thought of everything, from a lovely arrival gift to beach towels and bicycles. The fire pit was amazing and she even got us started with wood. While we were there for a girls' getaway, it would certainly also be a good place for a family gathering. There is a well-stocked game closet, basic spices and condiments in the fridge, linens and bath towels, and bicycles for adults and children. The washer and dryer was super helpful and saved us from packing so much. The front screened porch was perfect and very relaxing.

Amazing Cottage

This was our 19th summer of going on a girls’ trip, and we love this cottage! We were greeted with a very nice welcome basket, which included some delicious St. Julian wine! The cottage was bigger than what the pictures showed, and there were plenty of beds for each of us. The front porch was used during our mornings and evenings. We loved being close to shopping and the beach. The area surrounding the cottage was quiet and serene...and we took many walks. There were two wineries close by, and we enjoyed our time there. Don’t miss the velveeta cheeseburgers at Redamak’s! Rickie was quick at responding when we had questions for her. We will definitely be back! Thanks for a wonderful week for Trip#19!

Family vacation

Wonderful vacation rental. By far the best equipped rental we’ve stayed at…the bathrooms had plenty of towels and toilet paper, as well as full size shampoo/conditioner/body wash and a package of necessities in case you forgot something. The kitchen was just as well stocked, however, I would add a set of steak knives. Home was as described, very clean and comfortable. Our family of 6 (3 adults; 3 teenagers) had plenty of space. Check in/check out was easy. Rickie responds quickly and is very helpful. Location is good, a lot to do within a 10-15 mile radius. We had a few rainy days but visited the shops in New Buffalo and St Joseph as well as the Lighthouse Outlet Mall in Michigan City, IN. Barney’s grocery store in New Buffalo is close and convenient but costs a little more. You could go to Walmart in Michigan City, IN (20 mins) or Niles, MI (35 mins) if you’re looking for better prices. Pier St beach was a nice walk but we didn’t utilize the beach (not much space and hard to access if the water was high). Instead we traveled 2 miles north to Cherry beach (parking fees $15); Harbert Beach (no parking fees) and 7 miles to Warren Dunes State park (entrance fee $11). Overall we really enjoyed the cottage and special touches from Rickie. Highly recommend this property and owner. Thank you Rickie for sharing your home with us!!

Great owner, OK property

The property owner is quick to respond to contact and acts accordingly to any issues reported. She is polite, responsible and thoughtful. This is our second summer in the house and we did, unfortunately, note that compared to 2014, the property is more run-down and has not been maintained. While the home itself is lovely and spacious, it's not always comfortable. For instance, the living room with the TV/DVD, intended for family gathering and movie nights is furnished with white wicker. Our family had a hard time getting comfortable and settled on the traditionally outdoor furniture as its not meant for long periods of sitting (i.e. a 2-hour movie). The downstairs bathroom has a full tub, perfect for cleaning after a day at the beach. However, the pitch of the tub is straight; thus, it gets clogged/is very slow to drain so the person trying to get clean ends up standing in 3 inch. dirty/sandy water. A dishwasher is available (thank goodness), but it's "quirky" and if you don't stay around to start, stop, restart, stop, restart, stop... you come him from the beach to a load of dirty dishes. The cottage sleeps 11, but the washing machine is small and best serves 3-4 people. Overall, the best part of the home is the owner. We probably will not stay here again because the value simply isn't there. It's an expensive rental and we had to work very hard on our vacation (fighting with appliances, needing to call for TP, not being comfortable on furniture...) to relax. The property is about 4-5 city blocks to the beach and about 50-75 steps down to the sand. The house is in-between several stores; thus the traffic is somewhat congested. You will hear a train several times per day.

Exactly what we needed!

We were so pleased with the Blue Cottage! It was exactly as described and just right for our family. It was so well equipped for children with gates, beds, etc. and we were warmly welcomed with some local treats and the makings for s’mores. We fell in love with the area for its peacefulness, small town feel and beautiful beaches while still being near great restaurants, coffee and wineries. Thanks for a delightful stay!

Great historic home in Lakeside!

Charming however...

Very charming however, the upstairs had an unpleasant order to it and the bathroom on that level had a bath/shower that was not working correctly. The water pressure was so low that the shower did not turn on unless it was turned too much to cold water and the tub was useless bc the holes that house the jets in the tub were black and not cleaned out. So everyone, all ten of us had to use the downstairs shower. Also, one of the bedrooms on the main level is not usable in the cold weather. There was no heat in that bedroom.

About the host

Host profile image
I grew up on the East coast and summered at the shore in New Jersey. It was a pleasure that was taken for granted. When I relocated to the Midwest, Lake Michigan became a worthy counterpart. The waves aren't as dramatic and the water isn't salty however I no longer have to worry about those jellyfish!

Why they chose this property

When we found the cottage, it was in a state of neglect after being left vacant for a few years. I like to say that she had good bones. I am a sucker for bead board ceilings and wide baseboards and trim. Throw in six paneled wood doors French Doors and hardwood floors and I am in heaven . The cottage has all this plus rooms that have angled ceilings and exposed rafters. This is authentic, not new to mimic old. We could imagine what she could look like with some hard work and determination. We had a vision of a cheerful, cozy cottage coming to life and being a wonderful place for friends and family to gather and to make memories like the cherished ones that I have of my childhood spent at the Jersey shore.

What makes this property unique

The cottage has history with its platted deed dated from the late 1880s and sits in the center of historic Lakeside, a beach community that dates back over one hundred years as a summer destination along Lake Michigan. There is a sense of being in touch with nature as you meander down paths lined by decades old pine trees with the roar of the lake on a blustery day in your ears. It is not uncommon to sight deer in the ravines and bluejays and cardinals perched in the trees. A highlight of the day is watching the breathtaking sunset over the lake with the orangery afterglow lighting up the sky. The cottage offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and allows one to take a deep breath and step back if only for a short respite.
