About this property

Greenhouse Camelback in the Bywater

This recently renovated 2700 sq ft. Camelback Shotgun is an unusual out of the box Bywater Casa for the discerning Artist/Musician/film crew in residence, or short or long term travelers.
Meticulously designed by the owner/designer with 5 batches of reclaimed wood from various Louisiana locations: Lafayette, Covington, New Orleans and Natchez Mississippi as well 1600' of pine from the Hosier state of Indiana. This is a real living residence and not your typical Nola vacation rental property.

Greenhouse features a generous entry foyer, music parlor complete with Yamaha upright piano, Danelectro and Acoustic vintage amps, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, large open kitchen/grand room 800 sq ft. with 12' farm table, Verona Italian cook stove, 9' maple top island with complete pantry. The big kitchen room has 2 doors opening onto the 26' x 8' covered porch looking on to the west facing bucolic garden adorned with 6000 aged St Joe bricks and splendid church steeple views of the Marigny beyond. The kitchen space and music parlor can be made into one big space by opening up the 5' sliding barn door.

Designed with 1920's thru 50's Holophane, Dazor, Mg Wheeler and Benjamin lights, Emeco and Steelcase tanker chairs and Toledo, Lyon stools, this house is a throwback to the early days of ole American living. One of the best features of Greenhouse NOLA are it's vintage Philco, Zenith,Telefunken and Normande tube radios always tuned to the best of Nola's superb radio stations. There is a radio in each bedroom and in the kitchen. The House of Green comes with various books and music libraries and original artworks. Greenhouse's interior sheds character and charm from its carefully crafted reclaimed walls, use of vintage lighting, foundry molds and Americana artifacts throughout. There is also a sumptuous 600 CD archive of Jamaican, Brazilian, Latin, Indie, and assorted folk, blues, R&B, Jazz and Roots CD's.

This 9th Ward house is in proximity to St Roch, Crescent Park, The Marigny, Treme and The Quarter. The Bywater is infamously known for it's dive bars: Vaughn's, J&J's, BJ's, Markey's, and Bud Rips. Bacchinal and Mimi's are also close by. Greenhouse's "nom de rue" is mentioned in the 6th verse of Bob Dylan's "Tangled up in blue", and for those who are inclined to hear real good Live Music and don't want to just go to Frenchman Street, there's a large house list of the best music clubs in Nola and many recommended restaurants as well. This house uses energy efficient gas appliances, gas direct hot water heaters, mostly 60 watt bulbs or less, all dimmable and encourages a low carbon footprint for all users. There is an active train line that runs through the Bywater and Marigny neighborhoods, so beware light sleeper's. Greenhouse caters to respectful Artists and guests and is geared to longer short term visits. The pixs above should give ya a good vibe of what the house is all about, better pictures than words. Cheers and looking forward to seeing you soon.
Paz!

Holiday in New Orleans

This house has everything we needed for our Family Christmas in New Orleans! Wes was a wonderful host, showed us around the house and answered any questions we had. We loved the walkable neighborhood and found delicious food nearby. We were minutes away from the French quarter and everything else we did was easy to get to from this location.

Pure Inspiration

I can't say enough about the phenomenal Greenhouse -- starting with Jedi's responsiveness and house manager Wes's warm welcome, we felt right at home. It's somehow both roomy and cozy, full of books, art and music, and an atmosphere that spurs creativity. We loved the location in the hopping Bywater neighborhood, an easy walk to fantastic restaurants, bars and sounds. And I enjoyed the comings and goings of the nearby trains ... just like the daily tunes of the riverboat calliope, the railroad sounds are woven into the life of this town -- all part of what living in New Orleans (even for a few days) is all about.

A Perfect Fit

This house was amazing! Can't say enough about this place, it was a perfect fit for our group of 4. We came down to take in New Orleans and wanted a chill place to go back to and relax after our days. The house is huge inside with plenty of space. It was very clean and pristine. The bedrooms are spacious and well laid out. A friend and I where in the 2 upstairs bedrooms, both had access to a beautiful shared bath. They are a bit of a snorer and I didn't hear a peep in my room, house is very solid. The back porch and courtyard are such a treat! Oh the kitchen...incredible! Had 2 major foodies with us and they were in awe.

Beautiful house! Train tracks 30 ft away & upstairs very hot

This home is absolutely beautiful, large common spaces where my friends and I can congregate and connect. It's close by and walking distance to lots of delicious restaurants as well. It's absolutely perfect when you are awake. Sadly, sleeping was not a thing as cargo trains honk loudly at all hours of the night. 2am, 4am, 5am, 6am, 7am. I didn't stare at the location map closely enough to see that the tracks were SO close to the house (on the same block) and that it is a VERY busy cargo route. I was not blind drunk during my stay in Nola and basically did not get to sleep much at all. Was my MO to be completely dead drunk each night, I might have been less bothered by this. Second, one of the bedrooms had a loft in it that was not yet ready for use, this meant that we didn't have a fan in one of the larger bedrooms upstairs which made it nearly unbearable for 2 of the guests who had to sleep in very warm rooms. Taking naps in the afternoon was not possible. The temperature climbed to close to 80 upstairs with the A/C not being able to bring it down during the day and night. I understand, it is July, it's hot and the home might not be super insulated. However, a fan was requested and there should be a fan in that room. We stayed without one. We closed curtains during the day but it didn't matter much.

Mardi Gras Chill

The Greenhouse is an amazing property in a wonderful location. Mere minutes to some of the best bars and food New Orleans has to offer. Jedi is awesome to work with and has a house manager (Brooks) who makes the whole check-in process a dream.

Magical house in the Bywater

We couldn't have picked a better spot to stay for our Halloween trip to New Orleans. It rained for 3 days while we were here but we still managed to ride our bikes around and explore the beautiful city and in the downtime spend time as a group hanging around the Greenhouse listening to music, looking through the eclectic treasures in the home, and even putting together a puzzle. I have been to New Orleans many times and this time was no different than any other, I always end up feeling like I will live here one day. The Greenhouse is magnificent; a true inspiration to me as a future homeowner. Every item on the wall is placed to perfection, and each compliments the other as you find yourself getting lost staring at these incredible antiques. Jedi was more than a perfect host and touched base often about our reservation and making sure we had everything we needed for arrival. There was more than enough space for five of us, and with two floors it was easy to find peace and quiet away from the group. As was mentioned in the description of the place, and another salty reviewer noted, there is a train that passes from time to time by the property. The Bywater is one of our favorite places to stay because of this. It is a super mellow part of town, right out of earshot of the craziness of the French Quarter and partying. Instead, you do tend to hear the trains come by, but out of 5 of us staying there, not one of us would even consider this a reason not to stay here once again. I hope that we can book this property again; it was almost perfect that a tropical depression moved through for our trip because we actually spent more time inside than we usually would have. We hope to return to New Orleans again next year, and if we do, you bet, we'd love to stay here.

Would be 5 Stars if not for the TRAIN

Some of the other reviews mentioned the train, and I thought, "I've lived across the street from the train tracks before, this shouldn't be a big deal." But it was. The train is phenomenally loud, shakes the whole house, and can wake you up at any hour. You can tell this home has been lovingly remodeled and it contains a very cool curation of belongings. It's a delight to visit, but none of us got a good night's sleep.

Beautiful house

I recently stayed here with some friends and had a tremendous time. The house is gorgeous as is the plant covered back patio area. The neighborhood has all sorts of options within walking distance and the rest of the city is easily accessible. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

Wonderful house but the train tracks...

We enjoyed our stay. The location was perfect for us- within 10 minutes’ walk from Saint Roch’s market and other small businesses (Saint Coffee, Hank’s Market). The interior of the house and the backyard are wonderfull, however, we would have appreciated a strong warning about the train track that’s behind the house. The trains passed slowly day and night and honked loudly- half dozen times or more with each passing. We complained to each other about it at first but then got used to used to it after a couple of days. We were visiting for the Jazz Fest so went to sleep very tired each night so that helped.

Wonderful Cozy Art Inspired home.....

From the moment you walk into the Greenhouse you are surrounded with so many interesting details that you can’t wait to settle in. First off there is a magnificent large kitchen, appointed with everything you could ever imagine... leading out to an outdoor terrace/ garden great for sipping wine, or having a morning coffee However, its the reclaimed wood in the entire house, with all the vintage artwork, radios and multitudes of compelling books and music that just envelops you... leaving you with a feeling of such warmth and history . I loved both dens/living rooms; one downstairs.. very cozy to hang after a long day and sit with a book, and the one upstairs where its nice and quiet to listen to music or watch tv.... both spaces are very inviting the house is in a wonderful neighborhood where you get the full appreciation of the architecture.. i learned all about shot guns, craftsman and creole cottages... there are lovely streets to walk and so many eateries than you can imagine.. the quarter is close by yet far enough away to feel some privacy . .... and its an easy transport to see other parts of the city. i really loved the greenhouse. my bed was super comfortable, my room an oasis... and i’d be so happy to be able to come back and share with others again,.

this house is a work of art!

Wow! This home is truly impressive; the time and energy put into it's design and details are incredible. It's so enjoyable to spend time here-- the layout is smart and the unique finishes are so fun to marvel over. This owner/designer has put lots of thought into this space and it translates into a beautiful experience for all who stay here. There was plenty of space for our family to spread out and have privacy and we also enjoyed gathering around the large dining table, as well as the backyard for group meals and activities. The Bywater is such a great place to explore, and its just close enough to the French Quarter for more typical tourist-y excursions. Travis was so helpful in getting us set-up and settled and was always a phone call away when we had questions. All is as described in this listing and the house was clean as could be upon arrival. Thank you for such a wonderful experience! I hope to be back soon.

Great location and unbelievable home.

House was fantastic. Our group loved the Bywater area and took advantage of all the places nearby. It was a great home to relax in-between outings. The owner has remodeled the home and has many interesting details to see throughout the home. Travis met us with the keys and gave us a quick rundown of all we needed to know about the area and the house. This is the perfect place if you want to stay out of the insanity of the quarter, but close enough that you can visit. We hope to visit again soon.
