Disclaimer: The Melvin is conveniently located on Hwy 290, which does present some noise issues. A sound machine and floor fan have been provided to mitigate the noise. However, light sleepers might not find this their best option. This suite shares a wall with another suite, but is private and no amenities are shared with other guests.

Behrends Family Homestead has a rich history that can trace its roots all the way back to the great wave of German immigration. In 1853, Christian H. Behrends was one of many who boarded a ship in Bremen, Germany, heading for the “promised land” right here in Texas. Each adult paid $120 for passage to Texas and a promise of 40 acres of farmland in return. This influx of settlers later became known as the great wave of German immigration, and its legacy is reflected today in Fredericksburg’s German heritage, customs, cuisine and culture.
Each guesthouse on Behrends Family Homestead is named after a family member who spent time cultivating the land and shaping it into what it is today. The Melvin is named after the owner’s uncle who manned the family tractor at age five. He also performed odd jobs around the farm like fixing fences, bailing hay and assisting with cattle. To this day, Melvin is an avid outdoorsman and lover of nature, fishing and hunting. He is also a conservationist with a ranch home that runs entirely on rainwater.

To ensure a peaceful stay for all guests, we kindly ask that you respect noise levels. A noise monitor is installed to help maintain a quiet environment, and excessive noise may trigger a notification to our customer service team.

Quick getaway

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there! We were a bit surprised at how close the house was to the highway, but we were not bothered at all by the road noise. Hope to stay again sometime!

Throttle Therapy in the Texas Hillcountry

My husband and I planned this little weekend getaway while our kids went to the Frio River with my parents. Hurricane Beryl hit us directly, so this was an ESPECIALLY needed getaway from the stress of dealing with insurance companies and all of the cleanup! Our first road trip on our motorcycle as well!

Very Nice Place...Right Next to the Highway

My wife and I were very pleasantly surprised when we entered the property. It was very updated with great amenities. We did have a leak appear from under the wall (looked like maybe from the HVAC unit - which no one ever did come to check out) which turned out not to be a huge issue (just had to put a towel down and wring it out every once in a while). If that were the only "hiccup" during our stay, I wouldn't even have considered it. However, the one thing that is not in the property description is you can nearly spit from the front door to the highway - that is not an exaggeration. The 18-wheelers steaming by at 5am was not the wake up call I'd planned for. Take earplugs, you should be fine.
