About this property
Historic McIntosh Castle near downtown Kingston, City Park/waterfront, Queen’s U
Experience the grandeur of Kingston’s fairy-tale “McIntosh Castle”; a one-of-a-kind property.
For the first time in it’s history, you have the opportunity to experience luxury living in this charming abode. The petite one-and-a-half-storey castle was built in 1852 by Scottish shipowner Donald McIntosh and was lovingly restored in 2023 by local heritage carpenter, Peter Reid.
The space
This historic and unique property boasts 2,500 square feet of luxurious living space over two levels, featuring original hardwood floors, high ceilings, and general splendour. From the castle, you can enjoy stunning views of City Park and the Frontenac County Courthouse, and walk to everything downtown Kingston has to offer, including Queen’s University Campus, Market Square, bars and restaurants, the night life, and the waterfront trails and swimming spots. The Royal Military College and St. Lawrence College are also within easy reach by bus or car.
On the second floor of this enchanting castle, you will find three exquisite bedrooms, each offering a different and delightful experience. The bedrooms are spacious and cozy, with plush bedding, elegant furniture, and charming details that reflect the castle’s rich history. The master bedroom features a queen bed and an elegant, glass-enclosed ensuite bathroom. The second bedroom boasts a king bed, exposed brick and limestone walls, and a cathedral ceiling. The third bedroom has twin beds, an enchanting fantasy-in-the-forest fun theme, with a “hidden” fairy tale entrance leading to the cupola, where you can enjoy the views of City Park and the historic Courthouse. The two additional bedrooms share a charming and elegant bathroom with a claw-foot tub and a glass-enclosed shower.
On the main floor, the 80’s style kitchen has all the essentials. There is a breakfast nook with exposed limestone walls and light streaming in through the large windows, where you can prepare a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy the morning. For a more formal affair, the dining room can comfortably seat 12 + people with unique furniture and floor-to-ceiling French windows, creating a perfect setting for a memorable meal. An exquisite powder room is located on the main floor across the hallway from the entertainment room. Wander down the graceful hallway to the living room where you’ll find a classic seating room complete with an antique A.M. McPhail Jr. square grand piano.
This is a rare opportunity to experience the charm and elegance of a bygone era with updated comfort and luxurious amenities in a prime Kingston location. Don’t miss your chance to rent “the castle”!

About the host
Your host

I’m a musician/rugbycoach/chartered accountant/heritage carpenter. I love to share my “art”/ the unique spaces that I’ve created with discerning guests.
Why they chose this property
Historic Sydenham Ward comprises many of Kingston’s fine historic homes, buildings, cathedrals, etc. I very much enjoy living amidst the grandeur of an era gone by when classical design and beauty reigned.
What makes this property unique
How many chances have you had to stay in a petite, fairy-tale like “castle”? McIntosh Castle is the only Gothic Reveval style building in the city. It is a fun and elegant home and our attention to detail is second to none. If you are a discerning traveller, this place is for you!
